The ideal SSAT preparation period is 8–12 weeks. This plan gives you a structured, week-by-week approach that balances all four sections while building stamina for test day.

Before You Start: Take a Diagnostic

Before diving in, take a full-length practice exam under timed conditions. This reveals your baseline scores and helps you prioritize weak areas. OpenXLearn's mock exams provide section-by-section scoring.

Week-by-Week Schedule

Weeks 1–2: Foundation Building

  • Vocabulary: Begin learning word roots, prefixes, and suffixes (20 new words/day). Use OpenXLearn's vocabulary flashcards.
  • Math: Review fundamental concepts — fractions, percentages, ratios, basic geometry.
  • Reading: Practice one passage per day, focusing on identifying main ideas.
  • Daily time: 45–60 minutes

Weeks 3–4: Skill Development

  • Vocabulary: Continue word study. Start practicing synonym and analogy questions.
  • Math: Work through algebra, word problems, and geometry. Focus on your weakest topics.
  • Reading: Practice all passage types — literary, informational, persuasive, and poetry.
  • Writing: Write your first timed essay (25 minutes). Review structure and clarity.
  • Daily time: 60–75 minutes

Weeks 5–6: Practice and Review

  • Take Mock Exam #2 at the start of Week 5. Compare to your diagnostic.
  • Targeted practice: Spend 70% of study time on your weakest section.
  • Vocabulary: Review all learned words. Add 10 new words/day.
  • Writing: Write 2 more timed essays. Try both creative and persuasive prompts.
  • Daily time: 60–90 minutes

Weeks 7–8: Test Simulation

  • Take Mock Exam #3 at the start of Week 7.
  • Review all wrong answers from every mock exam. Understand each mistake.
  • Light practice: 30 minutes/day of mixed questions across all sections.
  • Write one final timed essay in Week 8.
  • Rest the day before the test. Review key formulas and high-frequency vocab only.

Tips for Parents

  • Keep practice consistent but not overwhelming — burnout hurts more than under-preparation.
  • Celebrate progress, not just scores. Percentile gains of 10–20 points are common with consistent practice.
  • Make sure your child gets enough sleep during the study period and especially the night before the test.
