SSAT Scores Explained: Scaled Scores, Percentiles, and What Schools Want
After taking the SSAT, your score report can feel overwhelming. Scaled scores, percentiles, predicted scores — what does it all mean? This guide breaks down every number so you know exactly where you stand.
How SSAT Scoring Works
Each of the three scored sections (Verbal, Quantitative, and Reading) receives a scaled score between 500 and 800. Your total score ranges from 1500 to 2400.
Here's how raw scores become scaled scores:
- You earn +1 point for every correct answer.
- You lose −¼ point for every wrong answer.
- Unanswered questions receive 0 points.
- Your raw score is converted to a scaled score using SSAT's equating tables.
What Are SSAT Percentiles?
The percentile ranking is the number schools care about most. It compares your score to other students of the same grade and gender who tested in the past three years.
- 90th percentile means you scored higher than 90% of test-takers.
- 50th percentile is exactly average.
- 25th percentile means 75% of students scored higher.
What Score Do Top Schools Want?
Competitive private schools typically look for students in the 75th–99th percentile. Here's a general guideline:
- 99th–90th percentile: Highly competitive — top-tier boarding schools (Andover, Exeter, Deerfield)
- 89th–75th percentile: Competitive — well-regarded independent schools
- 74th–50th percentile: Average range — many good schools accept in this range
- Below 50th: May limit options at selective schools
Remember: SSAT scores are just one part of the application. Schools also evaluate grades, interviews, extracurriculars, and recommendations.
How to Improve Your Score
The SSAT rewards preparation. Students who practice consistently with real-format questions and timed mock exams typically see significant percentile gains.
- Take a diagnostic mock exam to identify your starting point.
- Focus study time on your weakest section.
- Review every wrong answer to understand why you missed it.
- Take a second mock exam after 2–3 weeks to measure progress.
