SSAT Math: Strategies for the Quantitative Sections
The SSAT has two Quantitative (Math) sections, each with 25 questions in 30 minutes. Together, they cover arithmetic, basic algebra, geometry, and data interpretation. No calculator is allowed.
Topics You Need to Know
- Arithmetic — Fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, and proportions
- Algebra — Solving equations, inequalities, and word problems with variables
- Geometry — Area, perimeter, volume, angles, triangles, and circles
- Data interpretation — Reading charts, graphs, and tables
- Number properties — Factors, multiples, primes, and exponents
Key Strategies
1. Work Backwards from Answer Choices
Since it's multiple choice, you can plug answer choices back into the problem. Start with the middle value — if it's too large, try smaller; if too small, try larger.
2. Estimate Before Calculating
Rough mental math can often eliminate 2–3 choices instantly. If the answer should be "around 50," cross out 12, 150, and 500.
3. Draw It Out
For geometry and word problems, sketch a quick diagram. Visual representation makes relationships clearer and reduces errors.
4. Know Your Formulas
Memorize key formulas before test day:
- Area of a triangle = ½ × base × height
- Area of a circle = π × r²
- Circumference = 2 × π × r
- Percent change = (difference ÷ original) × 100
- Average = sum ÷ count
5. Watch for Unit Traps
Problems sometimes mix units (inches vs. feet, minutes vs. hours). Always check that your answer is in the requested unit.
6. Manage Your Time
That's about 72 seconds per question. Don't spend 3 minutes on a hard problem — skip it, answer the easier ones, and come back.
Practice Makes Perfect
The SSAT math sections reward familiarity with question patterns. The more you practice, the faster you recognize problem types. OpenXLearn offers thousands of SSAT Quantitative questions organized by topic — from basic arithmetic to advanced geometry. Start practicing →
