SSATVerbalAnalogies

Analogies are half of the SSAT Verbal section — 30 questions that test your ability to recognize word relationships. Unlike synonyms, analogies require logical reasoning on top of vocabulary knowledge. Here's how to master them.

How SSAT Analogies Work

Each question gives you a pair of words with a specific relationship. Your job is to find the answer pair that shares the same type of relationship.

Example: Painter is to brush as writer is to ___

The relationship is "worker to tool." A painter uses a brush; a writer uses a pen.

The 10 Most Common Analogy Types

1. Synonym / Definition

Happy : Joyful — The words mean the same thing.

2. Antonym / Opposite

Hot : Cold — The words are opposites.

3. Part to Whole

Page : Book — A page is part of a book.

4. Category / Type

Rose : Flower — A rose is a type of flower.

5. Worker to Tool

Chef : Knife — A chef uses a knife as their tool.

6. Degree / Intensity

Warm : Scorching — Scorching is an extreme degree of warm.

7. Cause and Effect

Rain : Flood — Rain can cause a flood.

8. Object to Function

Telescope : Observe — A telescope is used to observe.

9. Characteristic / Description

Ice : Cold — Ice is characterized by being cold.

10. Location

Pilot : Cockpit — A pilot works in a cockpit.

Solving Strategy

  1. Identify the relationship between the stem words before looking at choices.
  2. Create a sentence that links the words: "A ___ is a type of ___" or "A ___ uses a ___."
  3. Test each answer choice with the same sentence structure.
  4. Watch for distractors — choices where words are related but the relationship type is different.
  5. Be specific — if multiple answers seem to work, choose the one with the most precise relationship match.
