SSATReadingStudy Tips

The SSAT Reading Comprehension section presents 40 questions across 7–8 passages in 40 minutes. That's roughly 5 minutes per passage — including reading and answering questions. Speed and strategy matter just as much as comprehension.

Passage Types You'll Encounter

  • Literary fiction — Excerpts from novels and short stories
  • Poetry — Poems with questions about tone, imagery, and meaning
  • Informational/science — Nonfiction about history, science, or social topics
  • Persuasive/opinion — Arguments with a clear point of view

Active Reading Strategy

Don't read passively. Use this approach:

  1. Skim the questions first — Glance at what's being asked before reading. This primes your brain to look for specific information.
  2. Read the passage with purpose — Identify the main idea, tone, and structure as you read.
  3. Annotate mentally — Note where key details, opinions, and transitions appear.
  4. Answer from the passage — Always find evidence in the text. Don't rely on outside knowledge.

Common Question Types

  • Main idea — "What is the primary purpose of this passage?"
  • Detail/factual — "According to the passage, which of the following is true?"
  • Inference — "It can be inferred that the author believes..."
  • Vocabulary in context — "The word 'acute' as used in line 7 most nearly means..."
  • Tone/attitude — "The author's tone in the third paragraph is best described as..."

Time Management Tips

  • Spend 2 minutes reading and 3 minutes answering per passage.
  • If a passage is extremely difficult, skip it and come back — all questions are worth the same.
  • Answer the easiest questions first within each passage.
  • Never leave a question blank unless you can't eliminate any choices (remember the ¼-point penalty).
